They realized that their church defended many wrong positions in the past and they, although considering themselves Catholics, disagree with the Pope if his position is clearly wrong for them. That fact that is sounds bizarre demonstrates how little we're exposed to papal devotion.  South American Catholics believe a lot that Catholics up here do not, but they utterly fail when it comes to theologies about Mary and saints. Definitely not South American Catholics. &lt;I&gt;Maybe&lt;/I&gt; North American Catholics. But even then I would limit myself to referring to those who were less than devout. I had a good Catholic friend who definitely considered the Pope's statements just as authoritative as scripture.
