I don't know in South America, but here in Spain it's true, especially among Roman Catholics educated after Vatican II council. They realized that their church defended many wrong positions in the past and they, although considering themselves Catholics, disagree with the Pope if his position is clearly wrong for them. Moreover, they miss popes like John XXIII, Paul VI or John Paul I, and the wish a new pope in the line of those who develops the council conclusions or even gathers a new one.

If all Catholics had a truly Catholic view of authority, your friend would be the rule, not the exception. That fact that is sounds bizarre demonstrates how little we're exposed to papal devotion. South American Catholics believe a lot that Catholics up here do not, but they utterly fail when it comes to theologies about Mary and saints. Anyway, time will tell.

Unfortunately, most Catholics are more Protestant in their sense of authority.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure about that. Definitely not South American Catholics. Maybe North American Catholics. But even then I would limit myself to referring to those who were less than devout. I had a good Catholic friend who definitely considered the Pope's statements just as authoritative as scripture. So much to the point that in a discussion about what a protestant friend described as abuses of the Catholic church, she replied, "I'd be more convinced if the Pope said something about this."
